SENSORY KINETICS

EAI has developed and demonstrated a system to provide tactile sensory feedback information to patients during therapeutic activities, as an augmentation of existing senses. Vibrotactile displays can convey information about spatial orientation through touch and have proven to be effective and intuitive across a wide variety of implementations. Our therapeutic approach recognizes brain-plasticity, the ability of patients to retain skills and transfer this knowledge to other tasks. The approach is also closely related to standard PT care where dynamic exercises are provided by the therapist during activities to habituate and compensate patients. To this end we have developed a light-weight force plate, software and an associated training protocol that is used together with a vibrotactile belt display. Our initial work showed that this approach was efficient.
